We could only get these games digitally, but it was totally worth it.

Thimbleweed Park - A lot of Kickstarter projects can end up being disappointed by the time they're released, due in part to the massive hype around them, but Thimbleweed Park was an exception to the rule. An old-school adventure that offers a beautifully realised world, extremely witty writing, and characters the likes of which you won't find anywhere else, Thimbleweed Park brought us back to the old adventure games of yesteryear like Monkey Island, and we enjoyed scratching our heads to solve puzzles once again.

Golf Story - When you think of golf games, you might think of Tiger Woods and his PGA Tour heyday, or more cutesy titles like Everybody's Golf, but you probably wouldn't picture an RPG-lite about a man who tries to find himself by returning to the sport he loved in his youth. That's exactly what Golf Story delivers though, and it delivers it well. A uniquely compelling adventure that landed on the Switch this year, Golf Story charmed us thanks to its unique blend of ingredients, which never demanded too much of us, but surprised us nonetheless.

What Remains of Edith Finch - What Remains of Edith Finch doesn't actually give away too much in the title, as the game is simply about what remains. The beautifully told and incredibly sad family saga of the Finches and their mysterious house tugged at our heartstrings for two hours and included some of the most moving moments in gaming this year. It's rare you get games that truly make you feel by telling a human story, but that's exactly what we got here.

Immortal Redneck - On the other end of the spectrum is the incredibly outlandish Immortal Redneck, which saw you repeatedly take on pyramids full of enemies before upgrading yourself each time to get better and better. This roguelite didn't do a full reset each time you died, but had us hooked with the 'you do a little better each time' mentality, and coupled with the fact that it's a funny and wonderfully entertaining game, and we spent hours trying to defeat the pyramids and the monsters that lay within.

Cuphead - We all knew Cuphead was coming - we've been lapping it up at every expo and event we've been to for the last couple of years - and now that we've got our hands on the finished product we weren't disappointed by this excellent action-platformer. Boss battles, run and gun missions, and some fiendishly challenging levels combine to make one of those games that you hate to love, but love nonetheless. Throw in some stunning hand-drawn art and a stellar soundtrack, and you've got one of the best games of 2017.
